The Yeoman of the Guard 1962

Do you have memories of appearing in the G & S operas? Did you have a major part or were you a chorus "girl"?

The Yeoman of the Guard 1962

The above photo is from the programme for the 1962 production of 'The Yeomen of the Guard'. I have sent more scans of this programme to Tony and he has displayed them at

The reason I've put this photo up here is to tell you an anecdote. Some of you might recognise Michael Cole, kneeling on the left, in the role of Elsie Maynard. These days Michael is a professional bassoonist with the Philharmonia (at least he was a few years ago when I used to go to their concerts from time to time). He wears a beard and moustache these days, rather than women's clothes as you see here. It so happens that a woman friend of mine is a freelance bassoonist who has quite often played with the Philharmonia and hence knows Michael. One day I showed her this photo and teasingly challenged her to identify one of the people in it. She drew a blank. I pointed to Michael in the photo and said "you know this person". After further thought, she asked me "is it one of the Liver Birds?".
