"This match, played at Oxford, resulted in a victory for Pennsylvania by 11½ points to 6½. The American team consisted of Messrs. E. H. Miller, W. H. Hughes and N. T. Whitaker, of whom the first two mentioned have represented America in the University cable match.
"It was originally intended that three Oxford men should play each of the [opponents] two games, but owing to examinations and vacation arrangements this was found impossible. Eventually it was decided that Mr R. Lob should play six games, while Messrs. N. J. Roughton, A. P. Waterfield, and R. Petrie were to play twelve games between them. The match began on Monday July 27, and by playing two and sometimes three games in one day all the Oxford men except Mr. Lob finished by Thursday morning.
"Oxford started very badly, and had practically lost the match after two days' play. There is no doubt that stress of examinations work, combined with lack of recent practice, had a good deal to do with the poor score of the Dark Blues, and they played below their true form for the most part. Several games in which the Englishmen had the advantage were lost by indifferent play in the ending.
"Of the Pennsylvania team Mr. Whitaker proved irresistible, winning all six games.
"Mr Hughes won three, lost one (to Mr Lob), and drew with Messrs Waterfield and Roughton.
"Mr Miller won one, drew one, and lost four (one to each of the Oxford men). The Oxford points were made up us follows: Mr Roughton won two out of four games; Mr Lob won two out of six games; Mr Waterfield won one and a half out of five games; Mr Petrie won one out of three games.
"The Americans deserve great commendation for the sporting spirit they showed in coming over and arranging the first match ever played over the board by an English v. an American University."
