ENGLAND v. HOLLAND MATCH, 5th and 6th June [unattributed]

This highly interesting match took place at the Great Eastern Hotel on Whit-Sunday and Whit-Monday. Hours of play were from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3.30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

It will be remembered that last year the English team lost the match by one point. This year, though the team was undoubtedly strengthened, the issue of the match remained doubtful till the very last moment of play. England could only draw 5-5 on the first day and had a narrow victory by 5½-4½ on the following day.

England had white on the even numbered boards on the first day, colours being reversed on the second day.

Holland were a trifle lucky to draw the first part of the match; when the games were adjourned at 2 p.m. it was Dr. Euwe's opinion that England would win 5½-4½ at least.

Dr. Euwe won a very good game against the British champion. The latter obtained a constricted position out of the opening, and was never allowed an opportunity to free himself. Alexander came down to an endgame against Landau with the theoretical advantage of three Pawns to two on the Queen's side, but he played the endgame weakly and Landau was prompt to take advantage of his opponent's lapses. Fontein appeared to have slightly the better of it against Milner-Barry, but was content with a draw. Sir George Thomas v. De Groot was a colourless draw. Prins recklessly allowed his King to be driven to Q 3 in the early middlegame and should have lost two Pawns without much compensation. However, Tylor did not play the most forceful moves and Prins emerged from his difficulties with rather the better position, only to wreck his position by some ill-considered moves; and this time Tylor made no mistake.

Golombek against van Scheltinga was a tragedy of misspent effort which lasted from 10.30 in the morning till 7 in the evening. Golombek obtained the better position with a dominating Knight on Q 6, but found it difficult to make much progress. He refused repeated offers of a draw and overreached himself in the ending. Broadbent won a beautifully played ending against van Doesburgh. Mrs. Stevenson [Vera Menchik] had an exciting game against Muhring, and probably missed a win in the ending. Sergeant had a featureless draw against Mulder. Both Lenton and his opponent got into severe time trouble, and when they emerged from this the English player was observed to be a Rook to the good.

On the second day Fairhurst obtained a very creditable draw against Dr. Euwe, and actually had some advantage at the finish. Alexander got into difficulties against Landau, but extricated himself by some good play. Milner-Barry got a fine position out of the opening, won a pawn, and despite Fontein's stern resistance won the ending in excellent style. Sir George Thomas again had a dull draw. Tylor played the English opening, but by transposition of moves lured Prins into the Maroczy bind in the Sicilian. He came down to an ending .in which he was two Pawns to the good, but the position presented great difficulties which Tylor handled very accurately.

Golombek, rather disheartened by his seven hours' fruitless play on the previous day, succumbed rapidly to van Scheltinga. Broadbent had an even quicker victory against van Doesburgh. The Bradford player's great reputation in the north is well deserved. He played the best chess of the match.

Muhring had somewhat the better position against Mrs. Stevenson [Vera Menchik] but could not obtain more than a draw. Sergeant's treatment of Alekhine's defence was not very happy. He allowed his opponent the decisive advantage of two Bishops. Lenton had slightly the better game against Vlagsma, but the latter equalised easily enough.

F. Parr had two good games against the Dutch reserve player and obtained 1½ points.

We understand that next year the match will be played at the Hague.

[Euwe - Fairhurst]

[Prins - Tylor]

[Broadbent - van Doesburgh]
