In a lightning tournament Dr. A. Alekhine was the winner. P. M. List was second, and L. Prins, of Holland, was third. Mr. F. Mather, hon. treasurer of Plymouth Chess Club, was placed fifth, and Miss Elaine Saunders sixth.

Tony Gillam's booklet Plymouth 1938 and Bournemouth 1939, which is no.65 in The Chess Player's Rare and Unpublished Tournaments and Matches series, was a great help in putting together this file. Thanks to Tony for letting me have a copy, and in turn to Bob Jones who supplied Tony with the games played by Ron Bruce and Harold Mallison. With the benefit of the ever-expanding scope of online archives, I've been able to add a little more detail to Tony's work. The crosstables are almost complete.
