n.b. the format of the Championship was unusual. The first two rounds were played ahead of the main event, grouped within areas, so round 3 was the first round to be played in Weymouth on 6 April. With the tournament ending on 10 April it seems probable that one game a day was played for the rest of the event.

WEST OF ENGLAND CHESS ASSOCIATION EASTER CONGRESS, 1950
The West of England Easter Congress took place at Weymouth this year and attracted over fifty entrants from places as far apart as Penzance and London.
The Mayor of Weymouth invited all the delegates to afternoon tea on the opening day, Thursday, April 6th, and formally opened the Congress, which was held in delightful surroundings in the Grammar School. Next day there was a Civic reception extended to all the entrants and their wives and friends.
The West of England Championship was fought out between sixteen competitors over seven rounds on the Swiss system. H V Trevenen, of Cornwall, had a walk-over1 and only dropped half a point out of seven. Second was M E Poolake, of Bristol, and A R B Thomas shared third place with R M Bruce, two points behind the leader. 1 "walk-over" here seems to have the sense of "easy victory" rather than "win by default" - there is no evidence that Trevenen won any of his games by default - JS
In an all-play-all of eight rounds, fourteen-year-old Denis Gray of Exeter won the Junior Championship with a clean score, and was closely challenged by K[enneth] N[orman] Bascombe, of Poole, who only dropped one point.

WEYMOUTH
H V Trevenen of Penzance retained his West of England championship without losing a game. Only against M E Poolake of Bristol was he even in danger of defeat. D J Gray of Exeter won the Junior championship and Miss [Jessie] Passmore and Messrs. J G Pattle, R D Graham, C E Hurrell and D G Nash the "Major Open" sections. 49 participated in all, and all went smoothly—for C Welch of Bristol has a brother Adam Welch of Weymouth!

Other info gleaned from regional newspapers: Denis Gray's younger brother (Robert) Jonathan Pereira Gray also played in the junior all-play-all; at ten, he was the youngest competitor in the competition. Keith Edward Charles Budge was from Plympton. He needed a draw in the last round to get on the prize list but was defeated by Miss Kate Harris Passmore, sister of Jessie Passmore. Lt. Col. Charles Frederick Linnitt, headmaster of Weymouth Grammar School, closed the congress.
