The West of England Easter Congress (by Peter Hugh Clarke)

Though the standard of chess played in the West of England may not be as high as in most of the other Unions, there is certainly no absence of enthusiasm. This was again made clear by the annual Easter Congress, held this time in the Town Hall at Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, from March 23rd to 27th. Ninety-five competitors took part in ten different sections, most for championship titles.

The main event, a six-round Swiss System tournament for the West of England Championship, was slightly weaker this year. Neither of the 1966 joint-winners, P. Coast and D. Ellis, was defending, while such former title-holders as D. V. Mardle and A. R. B. Thomas were also missing from the lists. Perhaps J. Ansell, the British Championship player, started favourite, but losses in the third and fourth rounds wrecked his prospects and left the way wide open. L. P. Burnett, a student at the University of Wales, emerged as clear leader after five rounds and held this position by drawing a difficult game against D. M. Wise on the last day. D. J. Richards, the Exeter University lecturer, looked like sharing the title when he reached a won pawn ending against J. B. Goodman, but he somehow let the win slip from his grasp.
