BCM, February 1981: "The Welsh Championship was played at Cardiff’s premier hotel, the Angel, from December 28th, 1980 to January 3rd. The eight players and the controller F.G. Hatto were accommodated free of charge thanks to the generous support of the hotel. In round 1 one of the favourites, George Botterill, lost to Cunningham, the find of last year’s event. As a result the eight-man all-play-all developed into a contest between the Olympiad top board Williams and Cooper. Botterill had a big hand in the final placings since he lost to Williams in round 6, but then scored a nice last round victory over Cooper. Final placings: 1 A.H. Williams 5½; 2 J.G. Cooper 5; 3 G.S. Botterill 4; 4-5 P. Cunningham, D. Sully 3½; 6 I.C. Jones 3; 7 S. James 2½; 8 D. Johnston 1."
