Lewisham’s 1st International - by Richard O’Brien

43 players, including 2 grand masters and 6 international masters, from 13 countries (Australia, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Holland, Israel, Poland, Spain, Sweden, USA, Wales and West Germany) entered the 1st Lewisham International, held at Catford Cricket Club from 24 November to 3 December.

After just two rounds it was clear the titled players were not going to dominate: Mark Hebden beating I.M.’s Plaskett and Fedorowicz, and Polish grand master Kuligowski conceding a draw to the lowest rated player, Dr. Ha’eri-Zadeh.

After six rounds Westerinen and Hebden shared the lead with 5/6, half a point clear of the rest. Hebden, having achieved his first target an FM norm, now set about his next — an IM norm just 1 point away. Winning the tournament and obtaining maximum Grand Prix points (7½ plus 1½ points bonus) had not been considered, yet.

Round 7 saw comfortable wins for the two leaders, Hebden against Leontxo García and Westerinen against Kuligowski. During the day news had filtered through that Tony Miles had regained the lead from Hebden in the Leigh Grand Prix by winning a Midlands tournament with 5/5. Round 8 was vital for several players. Hebden obtained a big plus from the opening 2 f4 Sicilian against Hartoch but made little effort for a long time to finish the game off, preferring like his opponent and most other spectators to watch Stuart Conquest win a very complicated game against Westerinen. Stuart, having started poorly, needed to win his last 4 games to get an IM norm. This was his third win on the trot, the other victims being Casa (France) and Pytel. Martin and Povah, both a point away from their targets, FM & IM titles, drew rapidly. Fedorowicz and Kuligowski, by beating Kosten and Berg, ruined their opponents chances of IM norms and moved into challenging positions for the minor prizes. The last round, round 9 was an anti-climax. Fedorowicz needing to win to come second drew rapidly with White against Westerinen. Kuligowski, whose last round results usually leave something to be desired, quickly offered Nigel Povah a draw. Nigel gratefully accepted it and with it the IM title — well deserved after 3½ years of trying. Conquest tried for 24 moves to beat Hebden to achieve his IM norm and then took the draw; it is doubtful whether it would have been on offer much longer. Two local players, Andrew Martin and Danny King, both achieved final legs of their FM titles. Tony Kosten and Leontxo García achieved FM norms.

(Mark Hebden had achieved his first international master norm at the Lloyds Bank Masters in the summer, and went on to his third norm, and with it the title, at the Regency Masters just ten days after the Lewisham tournament - Editor [BH Wood]).

First upload of 173 games (including 1 stub), which is all bar a handful of the games played. Around 30 games of this event had been in circulation previously but with significant errors. The games were input from a problematic bulletin by Andy Ansel for which many, many thanks. We collaborated on reconstructions of a few games where the bulletin had errors or omissions; those games include explanatory details of the reconstructions. The bulletin crosstable also had errors but hopefully now eradicated.
