The Field, 7 April 1982 - Leonard Barden column

Next week (15 April) the great Phillips and Drew Kings chess tournament opens at County Hall, London, with the participation of reigning world champion Anatoly Karpov and 13 ambitious rivals. It will be the strongest tournament in British chess history and should be well worth a visit to see grandmasters in action. Games are each day from 15 to 30 April with rest days on 19, 24 and 29 April. Hours of play are from 1.15 to 6.15 pm and ticket prices are £3 daily (£1.50 after 4 pm). William Hartston of television's Master Game will give daily running commentaries...

Free Day April 19th

Football Match

Report by Richard Beville (from the bulletin)

The football match against the GLC provided some outdoor activity for the players on their first rest day. Play started at 4 p.m. on a sunny afternoon, the only complaint about the conditions being the hardness of the ground.

The Kings team included eight players - Spassky, Timman, Ljubojevic, Andersson, Short, Christiansen, Seirawan and Captain Miles. Their white shirts demonstrated a willingness to seize the initiative, which they duly did after twenty minutes, Ljubojevic converting a penalty which had been awarded for handball.

Things slipped a little during the middle game when four goals were conceded, despite Herculean efforts from goalkeeper Novik. An own goal by the GLC team, who included in their number the Chairman of the Transport Committee, Dave Wetzel (playing on the left wing - Ed) and Stephen Benn, son of Tony Benn, gave a glimmer of hope, but a late goal from the GLC made them five to two winners at the final whistle.

Of the players, Ljubojevic showed some nice touches, Andersson a high level of fitness and Timman (in spite of his blisters - Ed) proved a difficult man to dispossess, while the general level of application and commitment said much for their collective characters. Congratulations to the GLC, and many thanks for their post-match hospitality.
