The story behind the default game: "Local hopes rested on the shoulders of 19-year-old John Emms, who started strongly with 2(2). Unfortunately he defaulted in round 3 (against me) after breaking his wrist in a football match. John attempted to inform the organisers of his predicament but was unable to get through. In a rather delicate situation the controller decided that the default should stand, reasoning that he had not made sufficient effort to reach them. Of course, this unfortunate incident put paid to John’s norm chances." (Geoff Lawton, BCM, March 1987, p112)
