Round 7 - 28 September 2007 - "The Three Yuris"
So far I have received three nominations for the best game prize - here are the games with the players' own annotations. If anyone else would like to volunteer games, please let me have them ( if you prefer)
The Three Yuris: Drozdovskij, Yakovich, Kuzubov
Ever heard the one about the three Yuris? No, it's not a joke, it's the name of the three players who have White on the top three boards this afternoon. By the way, you will remember that it used to be worth about 500 extra FIDE rating points if your surname started with a "K" (I used to call them the 'Special Ks' - Kasparov, Karpov, Kramnik, Korchnoi, Khalifman, Kamsky...). These days it seems to be better to have a forename beginning with "V" (Vishy, Vlad, Veselin). This fashion also seems to apply to the top of the leader board in Port Erin this year: Vadim, Vasilios, Viorel, Vitali, Vladimir. out the top boards.
It was a tough round today as at 7pm (5½ hours into the round) with nine games left in play. Most of the long games were drawn and Yuri Yakovich retained his lead going into round eight.
This tournament seems to be breaking records for numbers of short, decisive games. Yesterday John Nicholson resigned after five moves and eight minutes' play, beating his personal worst of nine moves and 11 minutes. But today the taste for getting things over with quickly seems to have reached the upper boards. And I'm not talking about quick draws. American player Joe Bradford has done pretty well to reach the upper echelons of this tournament but he crashed and burned this afternoon against the 2006 Manx Monarch Alexander Areshchenko...
