MONARCH ASSURANCE 2ND INTERNATIONAL OPEN, Port Erin, Isle of Man 18-26 September 1993

The picturesque township of Port Erin was again the venue for the Monarch Assurance International in the Isle of Man. Apart from a very wet first Sunday and a damp Friday, the weather was dry and sunny, enabling the island to justify its reputation as "the Jewel in the Irish Sea".

The Tournament Director Dennis Hemsley had attracted 37 payers from nine countries. The field included defending champion GM Colin McNab, Women’s World Championship Candidates qualifier Ketevan Arakhamia (Georgia) and 8 IMs (including the new British Champion Michael Hen-nigan and his play-off opponent Dharshan Kumaran). After four rounds Kumaran was the only player left on 100%, having already beaten Howell and Arkell. Early upsets were Philip Rossiter’s win against McNab, and John Shaw’s victory over Arakhamia. A couple of draws by Dharshan enabled Colin Crouch to draw level in round 5 with a fine win over Howell which earned him the Best Game Prize. Kumaran pulled ahead again by beating Crouch, but John Emms had drawn level with one round to play. At that stage any of six players could have won or shared first place. In the event Kumaran won well against Kristensen, whilst Emms went down to Arakhamia.

The find of the tournament was 12-year-old Adam Hunt of Oxford. Going through the event undefeated, he drew with GM McNab and IMs Welling, Arkell, Howell and Koshy. Needing to win his last game for an IM norm, he was held to a draw by the Indian IM. Also just failing to make an IM norm was Philip Rossiter.

All five players with part-ratings converted them to full ratings, and six of the remaining eight unrateds achieved partials. The Junior Squad group of six did well, performing about their ratings in every round. They were coached by John Emms and managed by George Ellison who scored a fine win against Koshy.
