HASTINGS CONGRESS SUMMARY (from the bulletin - based on a report by Pam Thomas, press officer)

This year’s Congress, the 78th, attracted 517 entries (59 up on last year) from 25 countries. In addition Jeremy Menadue played under the Cornish flag and Robin Moss under the Hastings flag! Spectator numbers were up and the commentary room was full every day to hear GM Chris Ward's highly entertaining gloss on the day's play. Many players commented that this was the best ever Hastings Congress and the Horntye Park office received phone calls after the event congratulating the Congress on its success.

The Congress is again greatly indebted to its sponsors, Hastings Borough Council, for enabling the event to continue. Since finding an ideal new venue at the Horntye Park Sports Complex the fortunes of the Congress have improved year by year. Local sponsors include ASTEC Computing Ltd., General Dynamics United Kingdom Ltd., Deutsch Limited, Carr Taylor Vineyard and The Pig in Paradise.

The smart new website designed by ASTEC Computing of St Leonards (part of the Ashdown Hurrey Group) proved a great draw particularly during the live transmission of Premier games. The technology used to transmit games live is extremely specialised and although some teething problems were experienced the site has definitely enhanced the event.

Additional events funded by an "Awards for All" grant enhanced the Congress programme. There was a simultaneous display by Thomas Rendle in Priory Meadow Shopping Centre and two free chess clinics which encouraged local players to visit the Congress. Priory Meadow should be thanked for their support. There were also chess clinics run by BCF coach Christina Harvey of Hastings at the Congress venue, which received television coverage.

General Dynamics United Kingdom Ltd provided a prize for the best performance by a local player in the Congress as a whole. Alan Barton of Hastings won the first prize of £100 plus a trophy for his achievement in coming equal first in the Jubilee Weekend Top section, second in the A section of the New Year tournament and equal fourth in the second weekend Experts section. Zacchary Nathan of Sedlescombe who won the Novice section of the second weekend event was in second place. Additional events at the Palace Bars and Carlisle Pub were a great success as usual, attracting a number of grandmasters playing in unusually noisy surroundings. Evening quiz events were also organised providing all round entertainment for visitors to the event.

The closing ceremony was attended by Michael Foster MP and Mrs Rosemary Foster, and Deputy Mayor Cllr.Terry Soan accompanied by Mayor’s Secretary Helen Bird.

The Premier Tournament was won by top Danish GM, Peter Heine Nielsen, receiving £2,000 as well as the Golombek Trophy. In joint second place were Keith Arkell of England and Pentala Harikrishna from India. Keith Arkell also won a special prize of a crystal knight for the best performance relative to rating, presented by Alan Hustwayte, a keen supporter of the Congress. The world’s youngest ever grandmaster, 12 year-old Sergei Karjakin from the Ukraine finished in joint fourth place with Alexei Barsov from Uzbekistan. The female star WGM Alexandra Kosteniuk had a moderate tournament but attracted a great deal of media interest.

The Challengers tournament attracted 118 players from many countries including eight grandmasters. The event was won outright by English IM Danny Gormally who won the first prize of £1,250 and the Ritson Morry Trophy, and achieved a GM norm. In second place was a regular visitor to the Hastings Congress, Alexander Cherniaev of Russia, who received £800. There was an exceptional performance by 18 year-old Canadian player Eric Lawson of Montreal who managed a win and a draw against GMs and achieved an IM norm, as did two other players: - Timothy Woodward of England and Gavin Wall of Ireland. The two qualifiers for places in the British Championships in August 2003 were Timothy Woodward and James Coleman of England.

Thanks to Con Power, Paul Buswell and Pam Thomas for supplying information and to Peter Heine Nielsen, Keith Arkell and FM Viraf Avari of India for providing annotations for the bulletin.
