From Chess Circuit 5 (1994)

1994 Surrey Easter Chess Congress

There were 522 participants, a slight increase over last year, which meant every available inch of space was used, although a play area was supplied for the younger children. Quickplay finishes were used here for the first time, although virtually every other tournament uses them already so one would not expect any great problems. The Open was won by Mike Basman, with 6.5/7 ahead of Andrew Kinsman on 6. Grandmaster Bogdan Lalic surprisingly only managed 5. The "Premier" tournament for players graded under 170 ended in a tie between two former Redhill club champions, Martin Page and Richard Bryant, an interesting coincidence as the arbiter was also a former Redhill champion! Other sections were provided all the way down to "Novice". Trudi and Caroline did a splendid job in keeping the scoreboards up to date throughout the tournament. Kevin Thurlow

Date Notes
9 November 2025 Uploaded as a PGN file with 104 games (63 Open + 41 from other sections). Many thanks to Steve Giddins who very kindly volunteered to input the games for BritBase from the official bulletin. The bulletin had no details of results but I have been able to source these from the SCCU bulletin archive and Chess Circuit No.5 (1994).
10 November 2025

Two amendments: (1) the final few moves of Kinsman-Lalic, rd 7, amended (45 a7, not 45 Qb7, etc); (2) the bulletin gives both the McMichael-Ferguson and McMichael-S Arkell/Lalic games as being played in round 5. I have reassigned the McMichael-S Arkell/Lalic game to round 4 as it seems more likely. My thanks to Andy Ansel for drawing my attention to these.
