Round 2 - 24 September 2006

Top boards in action in Round Two

John Saunders reports : A good round for the USA (some consolation for the Ryder Cup defeat, perhaps?): Anna Zatonskih won on time against Viorel Iordachescu of Moldova, while Alex Shabalov had a let-off against Elisabeth Pähtz: the German player seemed to be winning but went wrong and let the US grandmaster back into the game. Landa-Palliser was turgid stuff until Landa eventually played Rxf6! - worth playing through just for that. Simon Williams is not someone you associate with quick draws but maybe he had something in mind today (getting his rating up to 2500?). More quick draws for Craig Hanley and Norman Hutchinson, both conceding large rating differentials. Connoisseurs of funny pairings - please see the bottom pairing for round two. (We were hoping for Majer to play Minor at some point but the Isle of Man player later switched tournaments to the Dennis Hemsley tournament.)

[A new move, and not as bad as Fritz seems to think it is. 17 ..Rfc8 has been played in various games from 1975 onward.] 18 Nxd5 Rfe8 19 Qc3 Bc6 20 Bxc5 Qxc5!? 21 Nc7

[Of course, Fritz just thinks it is the exchange up with a won game, but things are rarely so clear-cut in the King's Indian Defence.] 21 ..Nf8 22 Bg4 Nh7 23 Bh3 Bf8 24 Nxe8 Rxe8 25 b4 axb3 26 axb3 b5 27 Ra6 Bb7 28 Ra5 b4 29 Qa1 Qc7 30 Ra7 Be7 [Black finally rounds on the g5 pawn, to ensure he has a pawn for the exchange.] 31 Qa4 Rb8 32 Nf3 d5! 33 cxd5 [33 exd5? is worse: 33 ..e4 34 Qd7 (34 Nd4 Qh2! is embarrassing) 34 ..Qf4! seems to give Black good play. (34 ..Qxd7 35 Bxd7 exf3 36 Bc6 Bxc6 37 Rxe7 and the two passed pawns give White the advantage) ] 33 ..Qc3+? [Unfortunately for Mark Hebden, the text move has a flaw in it, several moves hence. However, 33 ..Qc2! holds the balance, e.g. 34 Rxb7 Qxe4+ 35 Kf1 Rxb7 36 Qa8+ Bf8 37 Qxb7 Qxf3 38 Bg4 Qxb3 and Black is doing quite well.] 34 Ke2 Qc2+ 35 Nd2 Bxg5 36 Qa2 Qc3 37 Rg3 Qc5? [37 ..Qc7 keeps the game going, but after the text Black is hit by a major tactic.] 38 Rxb7 Rxb7 39 Qa8+ Kg7 40 Qxb7 Bxd2

41 Rxg6+! 1-0 [41 Kxd2?? Qxf2+ wins for Black, while; 41 Qc6!? Qa7 42 d6 Qa2 43 Kf1 may also win for White.; 41...Kxg6 (41 ..Kh8 42 Qb8+ Qf8 43 Qxe5+ f6 44 Qg3 Bg5 45 Be6 is hopeless as well) 42 Qc6+ Qxc6 43 dxc6 and the pawn promotes.]

Monarch Assurance Isle of Man Port Erin IOM (2.7), 24.09.2006

Alex ShabalovElisabeth Paehtz[Black is three pawns up and winning but the route to victory is not easy to find.] 29 ..Ne7? [Fritz suggests 29 ..Qe8! 30 Qxd5 g2! 31 Qxd6+ Kb7 32 Qd5+ Ka6 and White has run out of useful moves.] 30 Qf7! [It is going to cost Black at least one pawn to extricate herself from difficulties.] 30 ..Rc8 31 Re1 Qa4 32 Qf6 Nc6 33 Qxd6+ Ka8? [After this, the advantage passes to White. 33 ..Kb7! 34 Nxf5 Qc2 35 Nxg3 Qxb2 retains an edge for Black] 34 Rc1 Ne7? [Now White has a forced win.] 35 Rxc8+ Nxc8 36 Qd5+ Kb8

37 Nc6+ Kc7 38 Qd8+ Kb7 [38 ..Kxc6 39 Qe8+ wins the queen.] 39 Qd7+ Ka6 40 Nb8+ 1-0 [40...Ka5 41 Qd2+ and mate next move.]
