1 John Anthony Sutton (1940-1987) is referred to in most pre-1980s magazines and bulletins as 'A.J. Sutton' but he discovered late in life that his names were given the other way round when his birth was registered. Thereafter he referred to himself as 'J.A. Sutton'. See BCM, October 1987, p449.

Results from the table on page 67 of the 1970/71 BCF Yearbook. Some of the colour indications given there are clearly wrong - I have tried to correct them but there may still be some unresolved errors.
Women's full names, where known: Jana Hartston (later Miles, now Bellin, née Malypetrova), Rowena Mary Bruce, Christine S State (later Christine Corden), Nancy Conchar Elder (née Gordon), (Doré) Elaine (Zelia) Pritchard (née Saunders), Olive Cecily Richards (later Chataway), Suzette Lilian Rose Roper (née Armitage, later Farrington), Mary Araluen Elizabeth Anne Henniker-Heaton (1904-1972), Joan M Pawlus, Margaret I Powis (née Cullen), Andrea M Smith, Julie M Dobson, Cicely Mary Murphy, Christine M Elder, Margaret Rowley, Jane Sadler Rees (née Davidson, b 25 May 1884, d 1974)
Mary Araluen Elizabeth Anne Henniker-Heaton (26 November 1904 – 31 January 1972) - obituary in BCM, March 1972, page 97: "Mary Henniker-Heaton - The many friends of Mary Henniker-Heaton will be sad to learn of her death on January 31, 1972 after a long illness. Since her appearance in the pre-war Margate Congresses, Mary was never far from the chess scene, playing for the West London C.C. and regularly attending B.C.F. Congresses. For more than thirty years one of our leading and most enthusiastic lady players, Mary was secretary of the British Ladies’ Chess Association in its early days and keenly supported the Queen’s Gambit Club. - Elaine Pritchard." She was the grand-daughter of Sir John Henniker Heaton (1848-1914) who was a UK MP from 1885 to 1910. Note that some years ago Mary Henniker-Heaton's forename was given on BritBase as "Monica" in error. The error was identified and eradicated here in 2017. I'm not sure who or what was the source of this error—it may have been me—but, to be clear, there is or was no such chess person as Monica Henniker-Heaton despite what you may read elsewhere on the internet.

File Updated
Date | Notes |
16 August 2017 | All 179 games, plus one from the Major Open and 17 from the British Under 21 Championship. Mainly from the bulletin, plus a few from the StarBase 4.56 database. Note that one of the championship games (Farooqui-Pritchard, Round 5) was shown in the bulletin with the wrong result. This has been corrected to 0-1. Includes complete crosstables of the Championship, Women's Championship and British Under-21 Championship, plus full results from all subsidiary events. |
16 August 2017 | Added LeMoir-Cubitt. |
23 June 2019 | Added RH Tracy-P Griffiths, First Class. Note, this was not Peter Charles Griffiths, who played in the Championship that year. |
25 October 2020 | Further crosstables added, plus forenames of players. |
10 December 2022 | Added a Major Open Game, R.Gamble 1-0 W.Raines, submitted by Mick Alderson, for which many thanks. |
11 December 2022 | Added two more games: (1) D.LeMoir 1-0 I.Meiklejohn (U21, rd6); (2) T.Chapman 1-0 M.Truran (U14). Many thanks to Andy Ansel for the games. |
18 December 2022 | Added a game: H.Ennis 0-1 J.Dixon (Five-Day 1st Week). My thanks to Gerard Killoran for submitting the game via the English Chess Forum. |
30 December 2022 | Added a game: P.Milner-Barry 1-0 G.Henderson (Major Open). |
1 January 2022 | Added a slightly tentative part-game, NN 0-1 G.Burton (Major Open). The source, Chessman Quarterly, gives 'NN-Burton, Coventry 1970' and Graham Burton played in the 1970 Major Open so I have assumed this is the event and player. It would be good to know the identity of White. |
19 September 2023 | Added a game Speelman 1-0 NN, U16 Championship, in which the GM's unnamed opponent blundered a piece in the opening. Source: Jon Speelman's Best Games by Jon Speelman (Batsford, 1997), p10. |
21 September 2023 | I am grateful to David McAlister for providing further information on the forenames and residence details of a number of Irish competitors in this event, which have now been updated. |
12 October 2023 | Added one game: M.Brown 0-1 J.Nunn, Under 18, from Secrets of Grandmaster Chess by John Nunn (Batsford, 1997), p26. |
15 October 2023 | Added two games and upgraded one existing part-game to a complete game (albeit with a different result: the game was drawn, despite what was written in Chessman Quarterly). All three were played by Ken Norman and played in the Major Open: (1) NN 0-1 G.Burton is now K.Norman ½-½ G.Burton (rd 4) and a complete score; (2) R.Ellison 0-1 K.Norman (rd 1); (2) K.Norman 1-0 P.Kendall (rd 2). Many thanks to Ken for submitting the scores. |
2 December 2023 | Added R.Gamble 1-0 K.Norman, Major Open rd 7. Many thanks to Ken Norman. |
15 July 2024 | Added the game J.G.Nicholson 1-0 J.D.M.Nunn (Under-18 Ch'ship). |
