"The main object of the tournament was to obtain Elo ratings for the four players (Bennett, Rumens, Goodman and Wicker) who did not already have them. The event was a success in that the first three named will all be on the new Elo list. Speelman, after losing to Bennett in the first round, then scored six straight wins." Date Notes
2015 1,935 games played by FIDE Master Bernard Cafferty (born 1934), including 2 part-games and 20+ stubs. Most of the games I input myself, from scoresheets and scorebooks kindly lent by Bernard himself. It is not complete - we have still to locate some material - but I have input everything that we have found so far and there may not be too much to follow. If anyone else comes across Bernard's games in publications and bulletins which are not included here, I would be grateful if they could forward them to me. My thanks to Ray Cannon and Gerard Killoran and others for submitting additional games.
16 January 2016 Games from the 2015/16 Tradewise Hastings Masters added
17 April 2016 Removed spurious 'W' middle initial from Ken Whyld's name. He had no middle name.
21 July 2017 Included the complete score of the Hecht game from Montilla-Moriles 1972. My thanks to Rafael Santana.
12 October 2017 Four games culled from Birmingham newspapers, submitted by Gerard Killoran, for which many thanks, plus a few notes to a fifth game. The extra annotations were to Barden 0-1 Cafferty, from the 1959/60 Hastings Premier Reserves Major. New games added: (1) DE Lloyd 1-0 Cafferty, also 1959/60 Hastings Premier Reserves Major; (2) Fuller 0-1 Cafferty, Birmingham Post Cup semi-final 1964; (3) Cafferty 1-0 D.W. Anderton, Birmingham League 1964; (4) Cafferty 1-0 G.H. James, National Club Round 4 1969.
22 December 2017 Two games added: (1) CB Wood 0-1 BC (Black), Coventry Whitsun Congress, May 1966; (2) BC (White) 1-0 J. Tolan, British Lightning Championship, 8 Nov 1964. Thanks to Gerard Killoran.
18 October 2018 Added two recent games - wins against John Sugden (Dec 2017) and Henry Cove (Oct 2018).
18 February 2019 Added one game: Cafferty 1-0 Wallis, Birmingham vs Leicestershire, 1965. Many thanks to Gerard Killoran for submitting the score. I have added BH Wood's notes from the Birmingham Daily Post, 12 Oct 1965.
13 March 2019 The game Cafferty-JT Howson, British Under-21 Championship, March/April 1953, added. My thanks to Brian Denman for providing the game.
27 March 2019 A further 12 games, though 9 of them are stubs (1976 Birmingham International) and one a part-game (Cafferty-Speelman, 1976 Birmingham International). One of the new games is Cafferty-Stean, from the above tournament, and the other is Cafferty-AT.Richardson, Birmingham Post Cup, July 1976.
28 September 2020 I have corrected the dates of the games played at the 1974 Evening Standard London (Islington) Open. This was split over two weekends and the Open was in fact played over the weekend of 20-22 December 1974 (and not 13-15th as I had previously). This affected the chronology of games slightly with a league match played on 17 December now being located before the Islington games and not after.
26 October 2020 Three existing games have been amended with particular regard to their dates, thanks to information supplied by Brian Denman. Both had dates that had been guessed at as the original scores were undated. (1) Cafferty-Aitken, National Club vs Cheltenham (1-0, 41 moves) was given a date of 1957 but Brian has reasonable grounds for believing it was actually played in 1962 in Worcester. (2) Wallis-Cafferty, Midlands Zonal (½-½, 26 moves), originally dated 1957 but again Brian has reasonable grounds for thinking it was played in 1962. (3) Aitken-Cafferty, British Championship 1960, round 4, was played on 18 August (not the 19th as appeared here previously). I have made the amendments. Thanks to Brian.
5 April 2021 Andy Ansel has tracked down Bernard's eight missing games from the 1971 Albena International. One of the eight was already a part-game score, so that increases the running total of game entries by seven, making 1,928 in all. Many thanks to Andy. (Also 5 April 2021: correction made to the score of Kupka-Cafferty - JS)
16 July 2021 I've just stumbled on the correct date of the game M.Macdonald-Ross-Cafferty which I had thought might have been played on 04.07.1979 for circumstantial reasons but I'm now 99% sure was played on 04.07.1981 in the County Championship final between Kent and Lancashire. I've made the necessary amendments to the game headers and relocated it in the correct chronological order.
15 September 2021 Now 1,933 games with the addition of five games from the Dr JM Aitken file (all draws!).
30 September 2021 The game S.Brown-B.Cafferty, London 1978, I have now identified as Simon D Brown (2080) vs Bernard Cafferty, Aaronson Masters, round 2, dated 24.03.1978. So far Bernard's other nine games from this event have not come to light.
01 January 2022 BC's opponent of 01.04.1964 at the Bognor Regis tournament corrected to Fernando Perez Conde. British records of the Spanish player usually give him as FP Conde but in accordance with Hispanic naming convention his primary surname was Perez.
07 February 2022 Bernard Cafferty sent me a game he played and won against Russell Granat in a Mid-Sussex League match between Worthing and Hastings 2nd team on 27 January 2022. A pretty good effort for an 87-year-old. The total number of games in this database now stands at 1,934 - coincidentally 1934 was the year Bernard was born.
22 February 2022 Added a game BC 1-0 NH Twitchell, Hastings Knock-Out 31.12.2004, recorded by LJ Cannon and submitted by Brian Denman, for which many thanks. Running total of games now 1,935.
5 August 2022 Added three games and one part-game: (1) J.Fuller 1-0 B.Cafferty, West Midlands Zonal 1970; (2) B.Cafferty 1-0 C.Burton, Burntwood Open 1978; (3) R.Sharples 0-1 B.Cafferty, Manchester Open 1978. And the part-game: (4) B.Cafferty ½-½ D.Mardle, Warwickshire v Gloucestershire, 1964. Many thanks to Gerard Killoran for contributing these via the English Chess Forum.
14 January 2023 Added three games: (1) J.Littlewood 1-0 B.Cafferty, Coventry Premier 1960; (2) B.Cafferty 0-1 J.Littlewood, Forrest Cup 1966; (3) J.Littlewood 1-0 B.Cafferty, Aaronson Open 1977, rd 4. These three games come from a file of John Littlewood games I was sent some time ago by Phil Adams who told me it had been mostly compiled by the late Keith Brown. The dating of these games (and a number of others on the database) is a little problematic, however, and is the main barrier to its being published here in its entirety.
9 April 2023 The score of Penrose 1-0 Cafferty, from the 1958 British Championship, rd 4 (21.08.1958) has been amended to show a further five half-moves were played according to the booklet of games of the tournament published by Eric Fisher.
19 May 2023 Two minor emendations made to the rd 10 and rd 11 games from the 1961 British Championship (an extra final half-move added in each case).
12 June 2023 1,961 game entries, including 40 stubs. A few stray OTB games have now been included, but the most significant amendments have been made to the header information for various correspondence games after Tim Harding very kindly volunteered to vet them. Previously it hadn't been easy to assign games to events as the available sources were far from clear and my limited knowledge of correspondence chess competition formats made the task more difficult, but Tim, with his expertise in this field, has now imposed order on chaos. Many thanks, Tim.
4 July 2023 1,962 game entries, including 40 stubs. Added one more game from the Challengers: H.Van Donk 0-1 B.Cafferty (rd 7). I have the late Peter Gibbs to thank for this: I was browsing his Birmingham Daily Post columns and found this game.
7 December 2023 2,021 game entries, including 40 stubs. I have incorporated 59 more games, mainly contributed by Brian Denman, for which many thanks. I have also endeavoured to sift through the file, making amendments and clarifications, and acknowledging where sources have differences. As well as contributing further games, Brian has been a great help in identifying inaccuracies and ambiguities.
13 July 2024 Amended the game Van Seelen 0-1 Cafferty (Hastings Challengers, rd 6, 3 Jan 1967) because the colours were wrong - it was actually Cafferty 0-1 Van Seelen.
3 August 2024 The stub of the game B.Cafferty ½-½ N.Povah, Aaronson Masters (rd 3, 24.03.1978) has now been replaced by the full score, kindly forwarded by Andy Ansel, for which many thanks.
8 August 2024 Now 2,032 game entries, of which 42 are stubs. Of the additional 11 items, two were submitted by Brian Denman (M.Nicholas 0-1 BC (11.05.2003) & M.Nicholas ½-½ B.Cafferty (30.10.2018)); two were stub games and others were part-games from the book Play The Evans Gambit (Cadogan, 1997), co-authored by Bernard Cafferty (with Tim Harding) (discoverable via an ECO code search for C51 or C52). I have also added minor details to some existing games, such as dates, venues and ratings.
16 September 2024 Now 2,035 game entries, of which 43 are stubs, byes and default wins. Two games added, both from the Mid-Sussex League: (1) M.Nicholas ½-½ B.Cafferty (1993); (2) B.Cafferty 1-0 M.Nicholas (1994). Many thanks to Brian Denman for submitting the additional games. Note that I have given the games a make-over so that some headers may be different, players' names updated, etc.
19 September 2024 Now 2,034 game entries, of which 42 are stubs, byes and default wins. Some cosmetic changes made (to 4NCL games) including the removal of one duplicate.
27 October 2024 Added one game, C Packwood 0-1 BC, Sth Birmingham v Birmingham, probably played in 1963. Now 2,035 game entries, of which 42 are stubs, byes and default wins. Many thanks to Brian Denman for submitting the score.
